How GRIDRA teaches
Theory → model → simulation → engineering judgement.
Every topic follows the same loop: understand the physics, see how it is modelled, run the model yourself, then read the result the way an engineer would. One example, end to end:
- 01
Theory
Why a synchronous generator's electrical power follows P = Pmax · sin δ — and what happens to δ when a fault suddenly removes that power.
- 02
Model
How the IEEE 39-bus system represents ten generators, their inertia and the network between them — every parameter published, nothing hidden.
- 03
Simulation
Apply a three-phase fault, clear it after 100, 200, then 300 ms, and watch every rotor angle swing relative to the centre of inertia.
- 04
Interpretation
Let the bisection search find the critical clearing time — then ask the real question: are the protection and breakers fast enough?
Live labs
Full simulations, not just a single number.
Run the IEEE 39-bus system — the standard benchmark of the power-systems literature, also shipped with commercial tools like PowerFactory — solve its power flow, apply a fault and watch every generator swing, or follow a partial-discharge pulse from sensor core to filter.
Fault Analysis Lab
Symmetrical-components short-circuit analysis for a source-transformer-cable feeder — pick a fault type and location, then see the resulting three-phase waveforms and phasors before and after the fault.
Flux Concentrator Core Geometry Lab
An interactive 3D exploration of toroidal sensor core geometry — closed ring, air gap, half-core and sector flux concentrator — and how much material you actually need, benchmarked against a published paper.
PD Sensor Signal Chain Lab
What happens after a partial-discharge sensor picks up a pulse — HFCT transfer impedance, a published R-L output filter, and the trade-off between 50 Hz rejection and pulse fidelity, benchmarked against published data. Continues where Flux Concentrator Lab leaves off.
IEEE 39-Bus Power Flow
A full Newton-Raphson AC power flow on the canonical IEEE 39-bus (New England) test system, bundled with the standard model. Scale load, switch a line out for an N-1 study, toggle generator Q limits, and read bus voltages, line loadings and losses off the single-line diagram.
IEEE 39-Bus Transient Stability
Transient stability on the same IEEE 39-bus system at three levels of fidelity — classical, with governors, or full GENROU + AVR + PSS — plus modal analysis — apply a three-phase fault at any bus, choose which line clears it, and watch every generator's rotor angle swing relative to the center of inertia. Includes a bisection search for the critical clearing time.
GRIDRA Sense Lab
Telemetry experiments for a single voltage sensor: compare periodic, send-on-delta and level-crossing reporting on synthetic signals, and see how many messages each rule needs against the critical events it catches, over 60 runs. A perfect link for now; not validated against measured data.
Live tools
Real engineering, right in your browser.
No installation, no account, no waiting — size an EV charging installation, analyse a real load profile, design a transformer core, or explore a turbogenerator and a neighbourhood microgrid in 3D.
EV Charging Capacity Planner
Check whether a building's grid connection can support a planned EV charging installation — with and without dynamic load management.
Load Profile Analyzer
Upload a load profile CSV and get peak demand, load duration curve, daily/weekly shape and a data quality check — automatically.
EV Charging Load Simulator
Monte Carlo simulation of an EV fleet, with arrival, dwell and state of charge drawn from adjustable distributions, combined with your site's load — P50/P90/P95/P99 peak demand, overload probability, and a safe fleet size.
Transformer Core & Magnetic Circuit Designer
First-pass magnetic design from Faraday's law and reluctance networks — set the voltage, frequency and core for a sinusoidally-excited transformer, add an air gap or a flux concentrator, and see the required turns, saturation utilization and flux split.
Turbogenerator Atlas
An interactive 3D anatomy of a 600 MVA hydrogen/water-cooled turbogenerator — quarter-cut, explode and cross-section views, animated H₂ cooling flow, and a plain-language explainer for all 19 major components.
Smart District
A 24-home neighbourhood microgrid over 24 hours — prosumer homes, a community grid-forming battery, sector coupling and a cyber-attack scenario, comparing passive and smart control on the same distribution transformer.
ARC·1 Atlas
An interactive 3D anatomy of the GRIDRA ARC·1, an 800 V electric hypercar concept — X-ray, explode and turntable views, animated drive/regen/charge/V2G energy flow with live telemetry, and a plain-language explainer for all 21 major components.
